Howard is preceded in death by his parents brother, Bruce and sisters, Lucy Jane and Julie. In his middle years he enjoyed digging dirt clods from nicely groomed grass, while chasing little white balls. For many years he and Edith enjoyed meeting new and old friends as trailer and motorhome campers in Minnesota and Florida. He was an avid hunter, and was proud of having bagged the largest buck of his life at age 86. Howard was a life long boater, including ice boats, sailboats and power boats. Those who took his Power Squadron Piloting courses do not remember them fondly, but they also never got lost! Howard was a 32nd Degree Mason and 40 year member of Trinity Masonic Lodge 282, and a 32 year member of AAD Temple of the Shrine, where he served as president of the Director's Staff. He was a member of VFW post 137, the American Legion, and was past Commander and Life Member of the Duluth Power Squadron. Andrews By-The-Lake Episcopal Church, and on the board of the Duluth Human Development Center. Howard was union president at Baxter Corp., and at the Duluth Public Schools. In 1978, he broke from Norco to start Fire and Industrial Sales, where he continued to work daily until a month ago. For 17 years he was a carpenter for the Duluth Public Schools, and then became a partner in Norco Supply Company. After the war Howard worked at the Duluth Steel Plant and Baxter Corporation. Upon his release from active duty in 1945, he brought his bride to Park Point, where they raised five children, Bill (Diane), of Temecula, Calif., Bob (Sandy), Jim (Mary Beth), and John (Vickie), all of Duluth, and Merry (Greg) Schmidt, of Coon Rapids, Minn. Howard married Edith Doty Johnson of Brooklyn, N.Y., in Jan. He continued service in the Navy Reserve for 39 years, retiring in 1978. Paducah, and served as a Pharmacist's Mate throughout the war, primarily in the Pacific Theater, attaining the rank of Chief Petty Officer. He shipped out for active duty in 1940, with the U.S.S. Howard attended Carleton College, Northfield, Minn., for a year, and joined the Navy Reserve in the summer of 1939, for 'something to do'. He attended Duluth Central High School, where he played football and hockey, graduating in 1938. In 1920, his family moved to Park Point, Duluth, where Howard for 86 of his 87 years. Howard was born April 24, 1919, in Virginia, Minn., to Bruce and Lillian (Spain) Boynton. Boynton, beloved husband and father, passed away at home, in the company of his family on Sept.
